What is L-Carnitine?

L-Carnitine is an endogenous quaternary amine required for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix. In research it is used as a substrate / cofactor probe in β-oxidation, mitochondrial bioenergetics and adipose-tissue studies.

Mechanism of action

Mitochondrial long-chain fatty-acid shuttle via carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT-1/2).
