What is AICAR?
AICAR is a nucleoside analogue widely used as a pharmacological AMPK activator. It underpins much of the published 'exercise mimetic' literature on substrate switching, GLUT4 translocation and mitochondrial biogenesis.
Mechanism of action
Converted intracellularly to ZMP, an AMP mimetic that allosterically activates AMP-activated protein kinase.
Primary research areas
AMPK signalling, glucose uptake, mitochondrial biogenesis, exercise mimetic models.
Research notes
- Commonly paired with SLU-PP-332 or 5-Amino-1MQ in metabolic pathway panels.
- AMPK activation is not fully selective — off-target ZMP effects are documented.
