Fuengirola: dense, walkable, easy to reach

Fuengirola is the most compact of the primary Costa del Sol towns — about 10 km² of largely apartment housing packed between the A-7 and a 7 km seafront promenade. Compared with Marbella's sprawling gated urbanisations, it is a straightforward delivery environment: conventional street addresses, numbered blocks, and almost everything within a few minutes of the town centre.

The town divides into recognisable zones. Los Boliches, immediately east of the centre, is dense enough to warrant its own area page. Torreblanca sits above it on the hillside; Carvajal continues east towards Benalmádena; and Los Pacos and El Boquetillo occupy the higher ground inland. The Castillo Sohail headland and the Fuengirola river mark the western boundary towards Mijas Costa.

Fuengirola sits on the Cercanías C-1 rail line, which makes it unusually well connected to Málaga airport and the city for a town of its size — a practical point for researchers who split time between the coast and the capital. It also has a large long-term northern-European resident population, so English-language correspondence is the norm here rather than the exception.
